Lemon Delight
Marie Gilmore talks to Molly Jones through her vision for hotLEMONdesign
We all like something pretty to stare at while we're enjoying a drink and, if the totty on offer isnt quite up to scratch, you'll often find your eyes drifting towards the walls in search of something better to entertain you.
Vanilla has always been particularly aware of this, and hosts regular exhibitions of up and coming artists. On display at the moment are a range of works by Marie Gilmore, who's no stranger to the popular Village bar.
This is my third Vanilla exhibition, but my first showing digital illustration," explained Marie. "The team there have been really good to me,"
Marie works in many different mediums, but this exhibition focuses on her newest experimentation.
"I chose to exhibit digital work this time because i've been playing about with it for a while, figuring how things worked in Photoshop," said Marie. "I felt it was time to get it out there for people to see and give me feedback on."
"The idea for this exhibition came from a few places," she continued. !I'd been looking at war propaganda posters which then led on to wartime pinups, and thinking about how they motivated the men in the forces and how much power a woman had. I wanted to produce some posters for todays gay women to motivate them in a similar way and premote strength. I think that everywoman in the lesbian community has at one point in their life, had to overcome a perception and expectation of a womens role and a distain for anything other than that. "I wanted the women in my posters to be strong and in no way doubting who they are. I think that's the most attractive attributes that a woman can project."
All the prints are available to buy through Marie's own design business,Hot Lemon Designs, so, if you spot something you like in Vanilla, you'll be able to take it home (pun intended)
The hot lemon designs exhibition is on display throughout March and April. For mor information on Marie's work, visit www.hotlemondesign.com
